An observatory where you can encounter stars both during the day and at night
Hoshi no bunkakan’s observatory allows visitors to look at stars at any time of the day. It is one of only a handful of observatories in Japan with a telescope that is open to the public from daytime throughout the week. And you can also stay at our adjoining mini hotel, allowing you to enjoy the night sky at your leisure.
In 2017, a 100 cm astronomical telescope, the largest of its kind, was installed at the observatory as part of refurbishment work. Computer-controlled telescopes with diameters of 100 cm and 65 cm give us a vivid glimpse at stars shining far away in space.
Our state-of-the-art planetarium projector, which enables high-definition full-color imaging, projects a beautiful starry sky on a screen, even on rainy and cloudy days. Interesting star-themed programs are shown every day, allowing people of all ages to enjoy learning about stars. (Running time: Approx. 45 min.)
Our shop stocks a varied range of products for that perfect souvenir of your visit, including star-themed products, telescopes and other original items only available here at the Hoshi no bunkakan.

An overnight stay really is the best way to make the most of your stargazing experience in Hoshino Village. As the night goes on, the air gradually clears and twinkling stars appear throughout the sky. We have rooms to suit a variety of preferences, from homely guest rooms furnished with wood, including Japanese-style rooms, family rooms with a loft and simple twin rooms, to capsule rooms.
Guests also benefit from an exclusive planetarium showing from 9 p.m. and astronomy session from 10 p.m. (free of charge).
(If the weather is bad, the program is changed to a planetarium showing from 9 p.m. and an astronomy talk accompanied by videos and photos in the observatory.)
Our one-night stay packages only include breakfast, so guests can bring in their own boxed meals, drinks, etc.
Regular guest rooms
Our guest rooms are accentuated with the warm and welcoming atmosphere of wood. There are three types of guest room, with a total of 8 available rooms: Japanese-style with tatami mats, family and twin.

Star Cabin (dormitory-type rooms)
Star Cabin is a simple capsule room for those wanting to truly enjoy starry skies.
There are two rooms providing a total of 6 capsules: one with 4 capsules and one with 2 capsules. These capsules are recommended for both single and group guests.

*Both sessions are led by an expert member of staff. During the daytime session, you will get to see the sun and stars visible through a 65 cm telescope. During the nighttime session, you will get to see major astronomical objects visible at that time through a 100 cm telescope.
*Please note that you may not be able to observe stars during bad weather.
*Please make a reservation for groups (15 or more people).
*You will be repeatedly shown several astronomical bodies visible on the day in order. (Example: Object A→Object B→Object C→Object A→B→C→A→B→C)
*In some cases, preschoolers may have difficulty seeing through the telescope.

Sometimes, the planetarium is booked up by groups for school trips or other events. To check availability, please see Home>Event Information.
(There are 25 seats in each showing. Please make a reservation if you are coming in a party of 10 or more people. If there are less than 10 people in your party, please purchase a ticket on the day. You will be issued with a numbered ticket. Please note that in some cases, your preferred showing may have reached capacity.)
